Remembering Abbot Peter brings to mind just how much the life of a priest is characterized by dedication, service, and simplicity. Our priests are responsible for administering the Sacraments, providing spiritual guidance, and caring for their communities. They are the shepherds to their flocks, much like Christ is seen as the shepherd of humanity.
I first met Abbot Peter Novecosky in person when I was still a Grand Knight, then elected delegate to the Supreme Convention in St. Louis Missourri in 2017. We had a chance to talk when we met in Minnesota flying back home to Saskatchewan. On the outside he presented himself as a simple, plain and smiling priest, however I soon learned that he attended almost every Supreme Convention to experience the presence of Faith from around the world.
Abbot Peter was a strong supporter of the Knights of Columbus and State Council, always giving us 110%. This commitment was also shown by his willingness to host the Annual priest Sports day in Muenster Abbey where he lives. Throughout the years I have been a member of the State Board and now as State Deputy, I have constantly heard Brother Knights and many Priests praise him for his kindness and the exemplary holy life he lived. Despite his knowledge and accomplishments, he led a simple life that hid his wisdom and active nature. When you encourtered him, you remember his smile and gentle nature… If you were near during harvest you might get the gift of a half sack of cornย ย — dropped by your house from his harvest at the Abbey that I enjoyed visiting so much.
Last Sports Day, July 22/23 was again held in the Muenster Abbey, but Abbot Peter was in the hospital, in palliative care. Worthy SAC Fr. Warren Dungen, Worthy PSD Brian Schatz and myself had a chance to visit him around 3 pm before heading for the preparation of Priest Sports day. Once again, I saw Abbot Peter’s smile when he saw PSD Brian and Fr. Warren. It was a very memorable visit, taking the time to have a simple chat… how the Riders were doing… the state of the school in the Abbey, etc. It was a nice visit and gave me my memory of the last time I saw him, when the news of his passing came to me.
In their statement , the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishop said Abbot Novecoskyโs life was a testament to faith, leadership, and dedication. โ His journey , marked by a deep commitment to his faith and his community reflects his motto, โ My Heart is ready, O God,โ. When I read this, and thought about his motto, I remember back to how he looked last summer, lying in his bed while chatting with PSD Brian and Fr. Warren — That smile of his showed a readiness without fear, and I am sure the gates of heaven were already open and waiting for a long time to receive him.
On behalf of Saskatchewan State, all my Brother Knights and their families, we send our love and gratitude to be able to be part of Abbot Peterโs life and his mission. He showed us all what it is to lead a life of sacrifice and service,ย offering support during significant moments in peopleโs lives and no matter the challenges faced, he found great joy and fulfillment in his vocation and was able to make a profound impact on the lives of people around him.
Thank you Abbot Peter, We will miss your wisdom, your guidance, and most of all your smile.
